Samantabhadra

Functioning in the World

His name means "universal virtue."

Samantabhadra is the bodhisattva of enlightening activity in the world, representing the function of wisdom. He also embodies the luminous web of the interconnectedness of all beings and the radiant visions that express it. His name means "universal virtue."

Samantabhadra and Manjushri are often paired as attendants on either side of Shakyamuni Buddha, with Manjushri, on his lion, representing the essence of wisdom, and Samantabhadra, on an elephant, representing the application of wisdom to actively benefit the world. Samantabhadra is the principal bodhisattva in the Flower Ornament Sutra.
