Here the way unfolds

1 of 1

Here is the place; here the way unfolds. The boundary of realization is not distinct, for the realization comes forth simultaneously with the mastery of buddha-dharma.

Do not suppose that what you realize becomes your knowledge and is grasped by your consciousness. Although actualized immediately, the inconceivable may not be apparent. Its appearance is beyond your knowledge

Here is the place; here the way unfolds.

Where is "here"?

The boundary of realization is not distinct

Reflect: Do you —really — think that realixation is something distinct, something you can reach, something you can identify as different from non-realization?

It’s not about a dichotomy — that's realization, that's not. Oh that's realization over there, but that over there is not.

for the realization comes forth simultaneously with the mastery of buddha-dharma.

With the complete engagement.

Do not suppose that what you realize becomes your knowledge and is grasped by your consciousness.

"Oh I know that realization. I’ll put it away and then I can take it off the shelf later." It’s not like that.

Although actualized immediately, the inconceivable may not be apparent.

You let it go. If a bird flies into your hand, you grasp it and then you let it go. Do you think you can hold on to that bird?

Its appearance is beyond your knowledge

You participate with it.

GK18???? audio Some of you may be thinking – “What are they talking about? What is this inconceivability? I understand things.” But do you really? When we step back, the world is just incredible. Who could have imagined it? Could you have made it up? I think people believe in god just because they can’t believe there’s any other way this could have happened. -there had to be somebody more magical. But here I am - sitting in SF, teaching about the genjo koan, which was written 750 years ago, in Japanese, talking in English, on a round ball that’s hurtling through space. with a body that’s awkward at best – with blood pounding through it, lots of cells somehow working together somehow to create this illusion of Michael, and your illusion of whoever you are. And something’s being communicated. It’s unbelievable. it’s inconceivable. And even the story you can tell to make it conceivable is almost as inconceivable as that. (reads through again)
