When
you ride in a boat and watch the shore,
you might assume that the shore is
moving. But when you keep your eyes
closely on the boat, you can see that
the boat moves. Similarly, if you examine
myriad things with a confused body
and mind you might suppose that your
mind and nature are permanent. When
you practice intimately and return
to where you are, it will be clear
that nothing at all has unchanging
self
When
you ride in a boat and watch the shore, you
might assume that the shore is moving. But
when you keep your eyes closely on the boat,
you can see that the boat moves.
Everything is moving. There’s
no one thing that stands out; it's all in the context
of everything else.
Do you see the world clearly or
does the world not see itself clearly? What is
right and what is wrong? Can you tell? I don’t
think you can.
If you keep your eyes on the boat,
you see that the shore is not moving.
If you're not keeping your eyes on
the boat, you might end up acting
based on your false assumption. How
often do you stop and question what
you take to be real, test your assumptions
before acting on them?
...if
you examine myriad things with a confused
body and mind you might suppose that your
mind and nature are permanent.
Everything is moving. Did you think
this before you read it here? Still,
are you willing to see yourself as
confused? Even when you look at the
boat or subway and realize that what
you were experiencing wasn't "real" are
you still sure of your assumptions,
your positions, your perceptions.
Are you sure you're not confused?
Are you sure of your perception of
yourself as fixed?
